The Worst of South Park: Butterballs

Description

Welcome back to The Worst of South Park, where I review my least favorite episodes of South Park. Today i'll be reviewing Butterballs from Season 16. This episode is definitely my least favorite Butters episode. As you know I like too talk about the positives before the negatives. And there were some positives in this episode. First there are 2 songs in this episode and there both good and catchy. Not as a good as Chocolate Salty Balls, but still pretty good. Also the ending was funny and good parody to what happened to the Kony 2012 guy. And Cartman was good here too. Although it has good stuff, it still doesn't bring up the episode. This episodes main problem is it's execution. What I assume Butter's Grandma wants is for him to stand up to himself. But he doesn't do it to his grandma. He does it to Dr. Oz. Not to mention how it was out of character for Butters and how unfunny it was. He should of told someone who did it. Not to mention his grandma doesn't get any comeuppance what so ever. Audiences like to see the bad guy get punished in the end and she never gets punished. Now let's talk about the Butters torture. None of it is funny. Especially the fork scene. Why was that there? They don't make it funny, or clever. Now let's talk about the subplot with Stan. It's actually a good satire on how anti-bullying companies are only doing these videos and campaigns for fame and fortune. However it didn't really work because it really did feel like Stan was doing it from the bottom of his heart. He wasn't douchey enough to make the satire work. Plus you also have running gags that don't work. How would I write the episode? Well I would cut the fork scene out, make Stan more douchey and have Butters call out his grandma and yell at her for how much of a jerk she is. That would be justified and Butters would be standing up for himself. And maybe the grandma would change. So the fact that Stan isn't fame hungry enough to make the satire work, Butters not standing up to his grandma, being out of character, his grandma getting no comeuppance and having little motivation for what she's doing and the Butters torture not funny and pretty cringe-worthy makes it bad. I know some people do enjoy this episode, but I don't. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
